Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
But, a segment of conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that included no new information.
