This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
